Tenancy Deposit Scheme to be introduced in Scotland

At the end of 2009, the Scottish Government annouced that they will be introducing a tenancy deposit scheme. Such a scheme has been in operation for some time in England, where there are two different methods: custodial and insurance backed. With the custodial method, the deposit is held in a central deposit scheme account and not by the agent/landlord. With the insurance backed scheme, the landlord or agent holds the deposit as normal but an insurance policy is taken out at the time that the deposit is taken. The insurance policy is intended to cover the cost of any dispute.

Introduction of the scheme has been opposed by the Scottish Association of Landlords (SAL) due to the experience we have had with the Landlord Registration scheme which most agree is badly enforced and therefore effectively useless.

There has not yet been an announcement regarding a timescale for the introduction of a scheme in Scotland.

Renting age rises to 28

The average age of people in rented accommodation is on the rise.

A recent study showed that the average age of people in shared accommodation has risen to 28 from 25 in 2006. This is partly due to first time buyers being priced out of the market since the housing boom of the early 2000’s but also due to difficulty in getting mortgages since the credit crunch.

We are celebrating the opening of our new Byres Road office by hosting an exhibition of art and photography by award-winning Glasgow based photographic artist Tom Manley.

RentSure Letting managing director, John Wilson says: “We have admired Tom’s work for some time and with his atmospheric cityscapes and architectural compositions he was ideal partner for this property based event.”

The exhibition also aims to raise funds for The Prostate Cancer Charity; John‘s father is a sufferer and he hopes to raise awareness of this often neglected disease.

The exhibition is free and runs from 23rd October at RentSure Letting‘s Byres Rd office, with an opening party from 4pm on Friday 23rd. Running throughout will be a charity raffle in aid of The Prostate Cancer Charity, with the top prize a signed Tom Manley print.

New office in Byres Road

We are really excited this week as we opened the doors of our new Byres Rd office on Monday!

A West End office was a natural progression for us as we already manage several properties in this area, our MD – John – lives in the West End and in fact began his lettings career there, working for a national franchise in Kelvingrove.
